Related to a previous post about not being able to obtain read and write
permission for a directory on an HPFS partition on one of my HDDs, I have
been unable to decompress any tgz file I copy from this directory to my
linux partitions.

I have downloaded a number of *.tgz files via OS/2 Warp into a download
directory on an HPFS partition. It converts the long linux filenames with
multiple "." into underlines (ie, "doom-1.09.i386.tgz" becomes
"doom-1_09_i386.tgz"). I wouldn't think that THIS would matter but...

Whenever I use "cp" to copy such a file to a linux partition and then use
"tar -x <filename>", nothing happens. I hit <Enter> and the blinking
cursor goes to the next blank line under the prompt line and nothing
happens. No disk activity, no error messages, for as long as I care to
let it sit there. In every case I have had to <Ctrl-C> to get back to a
functional command prompt.

I haven't tried to rpm install any *.rpm files but suspect the same
problem would occur there as well.

Why can't I use 'tar' on files downloaded by OS/2 but copied to linux
partitions? Must I recreate the "." in place of the underscores first or
does it not matter?
