Actually, magazine editors are very often intimidated, usually by threats to pull advertising from big budget clients. The only possible bigger threat in response is a threatened boycott by the purchasers of the magazine in response to obviously biased editorials. I haven't read the editorial concerned and don't want to debate it's merits but, the facts are that pressure is on editors to write up commercial products and write down freebies.
