Thanks for the reply, 

I am using 32 megs of SDRAM.  I have not noticed anything else that
would suggest memory problems.  I have used this particular system setup
while I was running Slackware and did not have this particular problem
with compiling the kernal.  I also have 80 megs of swap space setup for
linux.  And finally, I am not overclocking the cpu.
