Hi everyone,
Wishing to re-capture my 'glory days' when I used to use a dial in shell
account, I went out and bought ver5 of the redhat linux dist. I pretty
much read the whole of the installation guide that comes with the package,
I even managed to install Linux no worries.
I have put together a 486sx33 with 8 meg, it has a 340meg ide and a 200meg
SCSI and a 2X SCSI cdrom connected via a futuredomain 16X0 card, NIC is an
8 bit 3com elinkII, I'm running a mono screen (amber) and no mouse. Being
on a budget means that I use what I have, and it isn't a pretty sight! :)
I installed linux when the computer was in another room and not connected
on a network (will only consist of the linux and a win machine) and I would
now like to get the network side setup. The problem is that all the
references in the installation book are programs that run under X (I
believe). Now that I want to configure things with out the aid of a mouse
driven GUI, where do I start?
Does anyone know if I could even setup X windows to work on an amber screen
80x25? I'm sure I could get a mouse then.
The purpose of not having a mouse and colour monitor was so that I'd get to
play with the OS at a ground level, but not knowing where to start makes it
somewhat difficult, any reading suggestions? My ultimate aim for the linux
machine is to run as an email and news server transferring email and news
during the early hours of the morning (off peak rates) and as a firewall so
I can try out ip-masqurading and use the windows machine for interactive
net stuff.
Or would I just be better off starting over with a vga monitor and mouse?
But like I said, if I had the budget I'd have them already, as the linux
machine is only going to work as a server to the win95 machine (email,
news, firewall, etc) I don't see that I need a gui.
Cya,
Pete
