Here's one that came upon me suddenly and I can't imagine what I did to
cause it.

First, using RH5.0, mostly stock, with most of the listed erratta
already included with the distribution.

When I boot and get to the login prompt, I type in root and my password.
I get the line about the last login and then I wait......and wait....and
wait....then I get the login prompt back.

I can break out of the wait-login cycle with ctrl-c and get right to a
prompt.

I get similar (maybe the same) with a user login. Not sure if it's
identical because I usually get out of it without waiting for the cycle
to end itself.

Going into X, the Xterm window comes up without a prompt. Ctrl-c takes
me to the 'bash#' prompt rather than the usual prompt (haven't waited a
long time to see what happens if it changes on its own).

Everything, in both instances, seems to work correctly and without
problem except those named.

The only thing I did immediately prior was to set the timezone stuff
listed in the Erratta pages.

Any ideas how to fix this without doing a reinstall (which I'm becoming
professional at performing)?
