I had a similar problem.  Editing XF86Config and changing the Vconsole to match my
resolution took care of it.  I don't think you'll need to worry about the refresh
rates, nor do I think you'll find an option for virtual consoles in
XConfigurator.  There will possibly several Vconsoles-- one for each xserver (the
standard SVGA and one for an accelerated graphics card if you have it)-- to be
safe I changed them all and then rebooted.  Worked fine.
