Thanks for the advice, Sam. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I even removed
one account completely (from both passwd and shadow) and recreated the user
account with no change. BTW, I also tried pwck - apparently I don't have
that set up as it looked in /var/adm and /usr/lib/gopher-data with no
success.....

Shadow passwords are new to me :)
