If the Macs don't see it in the chooser then you have problems. Edit
/etc/rc.d/init.d/atalk.init and remove the word daemon from the beginning
of every command that starts netatalk. Edit /etc/Apple.volumes.default and
put the directory that you would like to share to macs on it's own line.
Check your unix permissions for that directory and try again. You have to
reboot to see if it works. I can't get the services to startup again after
a kill. I am using the beta.
