You may try a program called loadlin that allows you to boot into Linux
directly from DOS.  What you can do is boot into DOS, let the modem get
set and boot into Linux.  I do this for my MWave Soundcard in order to get
it to work under Linux.  I don't know if this'll help you or not, but it's
worth a try (loadlin is free).

Otherwise, do what was suggested in an earlier post, and go out and get a
new modem.
