You probably have debugging turned on. The sysklogd that is shipped
with RedHat 5.0 is somewhat old (1.3-19). If the lockup is cleard by
killing
the syslogd process
> /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog stop
this is your problem.

I havn't reported this bug to RedHat yet, but I guess I do that 
with this mail.

The solution is to get the latest sysklogd sources (1.3-26) from
ftp://ftp.infodrom.north.de/pub/people/joey/sysklogd/sysklogd-1.3-26.tar.gz

This version had some minor problem with map files that I ignored:
