You probably have debugging turned on. The sysklogd that is shipped with RedHat 5.0 is somewhat old (1.3-19). If the lockup is cleard by killing the syslogd process > /etc/rc.d/init.d/syslog stop this is your problem. I havn't reported this bug to RedHat yet, but I guess I do that with this mail.
