Oops, sorry about that.  It stands for RedHat Package Manager, and these
files have a .rpm extension, and are manipulated with the `rpm' program.

There is also a graphical version, called glint, that you can use to
install and remove packages (once you've gone thru the inital install)

Unfortunately you would have great difficulty using the bash shell during
the install.

Well, I really hate to suggest this, but perhaps you might consider
purcashing another one of those $1.95 versions from www.cheapbytes.com, as
I really do think you have a case of bad media.

Can you try this CDROM on a friends machine?  Can you send me one of the
packages you know are bad, and I'll try it here?  (preferrably not one
that is more than 500k :)
