Justin,
Not a fix, just a "work-around"

vi a file and place your pound sign in it.
Then, while in Pine, ^R to "read file" and type in your
path to /wherever/pound.file

That is what I do with ¢ (/home/rickdman/cents).

And maybe, from the bash command line:

rickdman # echo "this is 25`cat cents`"
this is 25¢
rickdman #

Just 'cause I can't remember "all them codes"(tm).
