Hi, hi.

Just some more ideas. I guess it's always possible to back up the configuration
files before installing the new sendmail rpm, though if the rpm had been
properly built, it ought to be able to identify the configuration files and
make a backup of these files instead of overwriting them.

The ip_allow, etc feature is actually a RH-tweak of the original sendmail to
provide additional non-spamming facilities. The same can be done - at least
in theory - for any sendmail distribution by including the relevant lines as
follows:

F{LocalIP} /etc/mail/ip_allow
F{LocalNames} /etc/mail/name_allow
F{RelayTo} /etc/mail/relay_allow

I'm not advocating that the sendmail 8.9 RPM be used, since I haven't tried it
either; just sharing some observations on the use of sendmail / rpm in redhat 5.

Hope that helps.
