no shadow !?

Hi, all! 

I wonder when I verify that there's no shadow file
in my /etc directory. I am using RH 5.0.
Maybe is necessary install the shadow ? 
Is the default no installing it ? 
May someone tell me what can I do to get the shadow
working in my system ?
