On my standalone machine running RH5.0 and XFree 3.3.2 I want to run two different
logins with different depths. I have one PC, screen and keyboard.

I use xdm to manage my logins and I have set the default depth in /etc/XF86Config to
16bpp. I plan to control the choice of display by issuing the DISPLAY environmental
variable from the user's login profile, a different value for both users corresponding
to the display required. This seems to work fine because the error messages tell me
that I have no display :1 running, which is absoluely correct.

The default entry in /etc/inittab to start xdm is -nodaemon and the
<XROOT>/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers entry is set up for one display, :0.

I have changed Xservers to read the following:

:0 tabs local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -bpp 16
:1 tabs local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 -bpp 8

where tabs is the hostname.

All that happens is xdm keeps loging onto the servers, repeatedly. I end up with
multiple instances of the server running. I run xbanner as well at login and get the
situation where I have may standard window arrangement over the top of a login screen
with the keyboard grabbed by the login resource for xdm. I have tried two different
methods of starting xdm, both -nodeamon and daemon mode. Nothing works.

I would be grateful for any help anyone can give me on this problem.I presume this
type of login is possible.
