After upgrading from RH 4.2 to RH 5.1 (I actually wiped everything and
reinstalled), my computer has been giving me seg faults on many different
apps, including:

  gcc (compiling normal programs)
gcc (random deaths while compiling kernels)
  emacs
  fvwm2
  make

I know that this usually indicates hardware errors (I have read the
SIG 11 web page), but I know I had never experienced the problems with
RH 4.2. Now, here is the really strange thing: yesterday, I updated
all the RPMs on the errata dated after June 10, except for the new
XFree86 packages. After I updated everything, I tried doing kernel
compiles again. I have been able to compile the kernel 40+ times
without an error (before, I couldn't do it more than 3 times without
an error). I also haven't experienced any other apps crashing since
then.

It may be just a coincidence, but it seems unlikely because I had been
experiencing problems every day after upgrading to RH 5.1, and I
haven't had any problems for two days since the updates. On the other
hand, it seems strange because none of the updates actually affect the
programs that are crashing. Maybe someone can shed some light on this
matter?
