Um, but when I try 'make menuconfig; make; make modules' out of the box (what you're 
proposing,
right?) it fails with cryptic error messages.

As people have pointed out, 'make mrproper' is required after installing
the red hat 7.1 kernel source RPM's before a 'make modules' can succeed.
This is counterintuitive.
