patch writing

I am working on a project to optimize tcp/ip for beowulf clusters and we need to do some patch writing does anyone have a good guide or tips  so far we have been trying to work with thing like   diff -rubB <filename> <filename> --- <filename> +++ <filename>   @@ .............@@ // here is the parameter we cant get right till now how does it work   + .......... -.............
