close files
Possibly you need to close some so they go away. Easiest way to accomplish
this is by rebooting (they can be hard to find). This need could arise, for
example, if you updated a package that's in use and includes shared libraries
such as glibc.
Reload the filesystem.
You might simply not have enough inodes on your device for what you want to
do. A larger partition will help, but if you don't need more space, you CAN
recreate the filesystem with more inodes.
Split the filesystem
If you have more space somewhere else, you can move part of the filesystem
there
(/usr/X11R6 for example) and then use a symlink. Or make a new partition and
mount it. Ugly, but maybe to be preferred to reloading.
If you'd like a new HDD, this is a good excuse.
