I have to admit I shot my mouth off before checking.  Even though the tutorial
is an sgml doc, it requires DocBook to make it work.

I found a nice FAQ/tutorial at 
http://nis-www.lanl.gov/~rosalia/mydocs/docbook-intro/get-going.html

I first copied the newt tutorial to /tmp, then used
db2ps tutorial.sgml
This created among a lot of other files, tutorial.dvi, which I displayed with
xdvi.  I think this will answer at least some of your questions.

It only took me two and a half hours of cut and try and search to answer this
question.  I should have been quicker about it.
