I didn't understand: are you able to use eth0 just from outside your PC?

Some time I had similar problem with Linuxconf on variuos boxes.
In all cases I resolved the problem giving manually the command:  

/etc/rc.d/init.d/network reload

after I configured all necessary files (/etc/resolve.conf,
/etc/conf.modules.....).
This is a command that Linuxconf should give on exit to activate changes,
but sometimes doesn't work well, I don't know why.

take a look to the routing table too, via the "route -n" command, even if
this error gives rise to unresolving problems (maybe is not your case)
