get rpm-4.0-0.55 from ftp.rpm.org (in the tests).
upgrade it with rpm -Uvh rpm-4.0
install all srpms you want and then come back to rpm-3.0 with rpm -Uvh --nodeps
rpm-3.0.* (you don´t have to use --oldpackage because rpm4 is not on your
database, but in rpm3´s database).
this is how i got gnome from redhat installed on Red Hat 6.2 (you´ll have to
change a few things in the spec though).
