I never used cartman or zoot list, but I have completely crashed many
times after downloading a slew of rawhide rpms to update my system. The
crash involved a wiped out boot sector on my root partition. Because I
am careful to always run lilo after installing a new one I just
discovered that the new lilo created 3 files: lilo.bak, lilo.conf.rpmnew
and lilo.conf.rpmsave and no lilo.conf. lilo.conf.rpmnew was blank and
the other 2 files had my original lilo.conf in them so I moved lilo.bak
to lilo.conf and ran lilo. If I had continued installing all the new
rpms when I finally decided to reboot my system would probably hang on
lilo and I would have to erase everything on my root partition and
reinstall.
