The intel CPUID instruction was designed with the idea of providing a serial
no. for cpu's, however it's easily to get hold of even when it's switched
off. It's present in P2's later than the 266 Klamath and (IIRC) on all P2
Notebooks. It's also present on all PIII's and looks like there's no sign of
it going. For this reason, I'll never buy an intel processor until they stop
making them like that.

Yes, but it was generally considered evil for privacy reasons and is
often disabled. It also is only in the newer chipsets so you couldn't
guarantee it to be consistently available.
