It seems that the termcap and terminfo entries in RH62 have been directly hacked "to get a more consistent behaviour" is, IMHO, a highly questionable way to go around fixing the long-standing issue of backspace and insert key behaviour. Ouch. A VeryBadThing. This now makes RH62 behave in a "non-standard" way. Certainly the hack works, but it isn't all that foolproof or failproof (nor "standard"). I have been doing similar hacks to get things like backspace and insert to work consistently for all distros back to rh5.0 using nothing but a customised $INPUTRC file and some very minor tweaks to the kernel keymap. (Way back then even the End key didn't work, easy to fix but didn't happen until /etc/inputrc started to appear). Hey, does anyone at RedHat realise that you can do redefine keys in /etc/inputrc according to "$if TERM=linux" [or xterm or whatever] or "$if Bash" ? I use it to GREAT advantage to control things accordingly, eg, "$if mysql", "$if ftp" and so on. Way cool feature of readline. Same thing with xterms, not to mention what is possible using Xresources appropriately. I had certainly thought about hacking termcap and terminfo myself (believe me, you can do some real magic in there, like add some way cool colour codes to some of the attributes). I have done this in the past - but I gave up on this approach a long time ago once it became apparent that doing it like this is a big maintenance and upgrade headache. The fact that my approach to coping with the problem is now completely broken isn't really the issue (I know how to "fix" it here). What is the issue is that someone has taken an approach that is very likely to cause lots of hassles in the longer term. All I am suggesting is that while this is an important and sometimes frustrating issue (especially from the average user's perspective), and while some obvious attempts are being made to address the problem, IMHO I am not convinced that hacking termcap/terminfo is the right way to go about "fixing" it. Back to the drawing board?
