man lilo.conf The two parameters you're interested in are 'password'
and 'restricted' Restricted makes it so that anyone can boot that
image, but the must give the proper password if they want to pass along
any extra options, such as 'single'. And of course 'password' is used
to set what that password is. And lilo is smart enough to warn you if
you have a password in a lilo.conf that is world readable.
