Hello,
I'm using sendmail and fetchmail for sending and receiving mail.
Connection to my ISP is via modem. The problem is that Redhat
mailing list users seem to be sensitive to the authentication warning
my mail setup is creating, creating bounces and resulting in an
exclusion from the list when posting.
The situation is as follows:
The local computer hostname is em2.my.own.domain (and localhost,
127.0.0.1). The login name is srs ie, [EMAIL PROTECTED] own.domain. At the
ISP my mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] In order to be able
to send mail, I have to set the user-mail-address to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] in .emacs (I'm using vm as mail reader).
Setting the user-mail-address creates an authentication warning in the
mails sent from me, causing all the problems with the redhat mailing
lists.
X-Authentication-Warning: em2.my.own.domain:
srs set sender to [EMAIL PROTECTED] using -f
If not set my ISP refuses to accept my mails:
----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors -----
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
(reason: 501 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... Sender domain must exist)
----- Transcript of session follows -----
... while talking to mail.telia.com.:
>>> MAIL From:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> SIZE=14
<<< 501 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>... Sender domain must exist
501 5.6.0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Data format error
Reporting-MTA: dns; em2.my.own.domain

How do I configure sendmail/vm/hosts to avoid this problem!!??
The sendmail documentation is 85 pages, so going through this will take a
long time! Pointers to something shorter, FAQ's etc.
Hoping for help,
Svante Signell
