I've found the reason: it's this setting in the ~/.Xdefaults:
XTerm.VT100.titeInhibit: true
Comment it out and the problem will go away. Needless to say, it's exactly
the same as in /etc/skel/.Xdefaults, so I'd like to see it fixed in
rawhide.
Here's what the manpage says:
titeInhibit (class TiteInhibit)
Specifies whether or not xterm should
remove ti and te termcap entries (used to switch
between alternate screens on startup of many
screen-oriented programs) from the TERMCAP string.
If set, xterm also ignores the escape sequence to
switch to the alternate screen.
And the description in .Xdefaults looks rather contradicting:
This resource specifies whether or not to ignore the 'alternate screen' of
applications such as vi. When it is on, these applications will restore
the contents of the screen when they are exited to what they were before
they were started. When it is off, the contents of vi will remain on the
screen after the program is quit.
