... and if the kernel recognizes the drive, but you
get something like this when you attempt to mount
the media

  sda : sense not available.

   unable to read partition table 

go to the BIOS and change EPP version from 1.7 to 1.9.
I don't know why but it helped on my Abit BP6 (BTW the
drive was accessible under NT even with the 1.7 setting).
