I just ran across that exact same problem recently when I installed RH 5.2 from scratch (I have never had this problem before) and I had compiled and installed the 2.2.12 kernel (which I have done already about 10x before, I have a fetish of destroying my partitions :) Anyway, so eventually got so fedup, I went into kernel config (make xconfig) and modulized all the filesystem drivers... no more error... I wish I did know what exactly caused it... but I had everything checked that I had before, so I was baffled, out of frustration I modularized it all, and now no problem.
