Hi Lou, It does sound like you may need a firmware update but it may have been pre configured for you long ago.
When you interconnect with the Sunny Boy through the Webbox, if you are off-grid, the country code parameter may say something like Default and/or Cntry Set. Then, you would program this parameter to be Off-grid or Off-grid 60 (for 60 Hz grid). It should auto populate adjusted parameters. As far as the PV only vs Gen question. If you have a generator connected to the Sunny Island, you will want to use "Gen". PV only means that there is no grid or generator in the system, just a Sunnyboy downstream of the load terminals, typically back feeding the load center.
