Those devices were susceptible to catching fire. I saw a hole burned in a roof from one of them. It is a great idea however.

There was a company that sold a mlpe that went online with a single module in a string, that when temps were low, would bypass the module and prevent string overvoltage.
I don't believe the company is in business any longer.
We re powered a PV system that had been installed with them a couple years ago. Most of the devices were charred failures.

Has anyone encountered a system to use something like a Zener Circuit to clamp a string input at 600Voc? I've encountered many systems which, after designing for 600Voc, end up with ~300-350Vmp, which is less than ideal on a long-distance run. Since Voc should be a rare situation at the 2% temp, it seems like it would be better to clamp the voltage in those situations, and design for optimum performance in normal operation.
