We have a drawer full of labels and placards from PV-Labels.  If we need smaller "fine-tuned" labels quickly, occasionally we'll use the Brady BMP21 Plus (3/4" vinyl cartridge) if its not going to see much sun.  The label makers you may be referring to cost $700 to $4K! so we've opted to stock PV-labels.  PV-labels makes a zillion different labels and will custom make and ship same day labels of your request, placards too usually next day.

Hey Wrenches,
Anyone had any luck with one of those DIY label maker machines you can bring to the site? I'm skeptical of most of them for fear that the quality of the label isn't up to constant sun exposure, rain, weather, etc. Would be a nice to have for the non-standard labels that are different from project to project.

Thx,
Evan
