Hi All We have had similar disasters with the Aquions going bad… same problems, some installers have loosened the nut with ruinous results but, bad trays in the stack are common as well.

I can vouch for that as well, not my doing, but I could not recover the batteries where that had been done. I tightened the nuts and got just about one cycle before they were gone. I suspect that the temperature cycling of the batteries enhanced creep of the case and active materials to the point where there was no longer adequate compression, and so they are failing. It could be that if they had mfg them with steel cases and permanent layer level compression they might have been longer lived. One thing about being able to take the layers apart is that they are much easier to move around that way. Each layer is only about 30 lbs. Then you can find creative uses for the aluminum bases and high strength threaded rod from them. If you need an MSDS to show to the disposal site, contact me at AEE Solar. At our Hazo House locally here, they took a brief look at the MSDS and said, sure bring them in, no problem. Worth a try. Many of the systems have one or two "layers" that have gone bad. Voltage spikes up to the 14-15V range while charging and cratering to zero if even the tiniest load is put on it (e.g. turning on a charge controller, like I said...tiny). So I do not believe charging that particular "layer" with 6V charger would fix the problem. Has anybody out there swapped out a bad "layer" with a good one and reassembled the stack? Is it even possible? As always thanks for the help.
