I'm just going to add that some installers here are installing Li+ batteries indoors on the 2nd floor.  One was in the bedroom and kept the customer awake.  Plus when you consider that indoor space on homes can be up in the $300/ sq ft range that's adding quite a bit to the total cost of the PV system. Back to the signage issue, I haven't seen requirements, but some off grid places have signage near the door mentioning that the house is powered by a battery system with generator backup and may also describe the location of the disconnect.  I think it's a good idea to have a warning for any house with a  backup system: generator, batteries, etc.  However in practice on off grid homes, its usually way too late to worry about cutting power once the local VFD shows up.  They just contain the fire, but they're not going in.

Hi David,

For Offgrid it varies from do whatever you want because there is no inspection to my philosophy of always exceeding code and using decades of offgrid common sense.  Many Offgrid homes do not have someone to help because they often are remotely located.
I would like to add on to your request here because I am seeing alot
of people thinking/installing batteries in the conditioned space of a
home. I have always believed that unless the battery was listed for
conditioned space, (some Li Ion are) that it was a bad idea to do
this. Not to mention insurance not covering a claim in a fire. Thx.

What is the current code requirements around the country for required signage for a residence/business with back-up battery storage?
  * For a home with a grid-tied PV system with back-up battery bank
    in the basement.
  * For an off-grid home with a stand alone power system.
  * For a business.

I am volunteering to help fire departments in northern Vermont deal with emergency fire response on homes and businesses that may have solar and other alternative power sources.
