Do you think the wire wrapped around the stator is 4/0? It would have to be
a huge lump of an alternator.
You can't use NEC code to determine wiring specify inside machines. I
recently changed the power cord on my welder to an L14-50,  connected it to
the internal 40 amp breaker, which was wired to the motherboard with
2x18awg wires per leg.
As long as the cabling is rated for the heat,  what's the issue when you
are talking short lengths.
