Dana,

        I am no expert with ground source heat pumps, but I suspect that the 
measurement you took was when the resistance heat strips were on, which will 
only be used very infrequently in a properly designed and operated GSHP system. 
 Despite that, GSHP can be used off-grid with the heat strips off, but add a 
couple more KWs to the array and insulate the heck out of the structure, plus I 
suggest a LPG back-up.  

        GSHP's are not a slam-dunk install.  It is very important to find 
someone that will take a careful look at the particulars of a job (house, 
climate zone, soil type, etc....) to be sure the final product is efficient in 
its operation, esp for off-grid.
