So if you had a 48 v battery, you could go to 298 vdc Open circuit (in extreme cold for instance) without damage. The Classic controller shuts off above 250 v though, so you don't want to design the system to operate that high, but it does give you some breathing room with the design. Also on the "overkill" issue of a 1 Kw array, it all depends on the battery voltage. At 24 v battery, the Classic 250 can handle a maximum of 1722 watts.
