I always thought small multi-voltage taps, for example a 12 volt domestic water pressure pump center-tapped from a 24 volt battery bank, would be no problem, too, but experience and troubleshooting calls have proved otherwise. Even such a low-power intermittent use has caused serious problems in systems I've looked at.

Hopefully you don't have any huge DC loads, and can use 48V DC-DC converters at a reasonable price.
