I have never thought that it made any sense to insulate a battery box. It
might be logical to put a break between the cold ground and the batteries
but otherwise it's a waste of time.

They need to be vented to clear the gas. Also the battery is so dense that
it changes temperature slowly anyway. If they are outside at -40 and
undercharged you could have problems but insulating keeps the cold out as
well as the heat and vice versa. 

We still need to oversize the battery bank if it will be in a cold area. But
if it is getting charged regularly they will hold heat on their own, at
least no sudden swings.
