While I strongly recommend the use of a worm gear type winch (because of it's braking ability) I have to admit that they're getting harder to find.
My elevator guy turned me on to the GoLo - an AC powered hoist that has been made by the same family-owned company for 40 years <http://www.cordem.com/> We use them for all sorts of stuff when the truck is not the power source. Mile Marker hydraulic is our preference when vehicle mounted.
Make sure that your winch rating is considerably higher than the load you're pulling. Winch load ratings are as slippery to decipher as wind turbine ratings ;-)
The magic word when you are shopping is hoist - these are industrial ratings for a deadlift with safety factor included. Very hard to get the offroad makers to come up with a hoist rating, probably due to liability. . _______________________________________________ List sponsored by Home Power magazine List Address: RE-wrenches@lists.re-wrenches.org Options & settings: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/options.cgi/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List-Archive: http://lists.re-wrenches.org/pipermail/re-wrenches-re-wrenches.org List rules & etiquette: www.re-wrenches.org/etiquette.htm Check out participant bios: www.members.re-wrenches.org
