I have successfully used homebrewed water heater loops through woodstove fire boxes for many years. Doesn't HAVE to be a "coil" but coiling does save space. The latest one was what you might call serpentine using S.S> elbows and nipples (assembled then welded) 2 inch. Works fine. The only time I had a Holt-style "Boom" was when I inadvertently let it freeze by not draining it completely in freezing weather. First fire before it thawed DID let some steam out in an impressive manner. Take care to provide drainabillity, of course. Nick Houser, Off Grid
