Hello Dick,
Thanks for the link. That looks like an interesting option for off
grid situations. I'm not totally sure why it is needed with SMA
equipment. With the RS 485 Com card, the Sunny Islands and Sunny
Boys talk to each other, and fine tune the power available for
battery charging. They will derate, and eventually shut down the
Sunny Boys. This new option seems good if there is a use for the
dumped power.
For on-grid systems, I think a relay is adequate for regulating
battery voltage while AC coupling an on-grid inverter to a battery
based unit. When the battery voltage reaches a certain level, the
grid-tie inverters are disconnected. When the grid goes back on
line, the batteries will be properly conditioned by the battery based
inverters. With SMA equipment, the Sunny Island will
frequency-shift, and shut down the Sunny Boys even without the RS 485
Com cards, so an external relay is not needed.

As far as I know, and I asked SMA directly 9 months ago, this is not presently
available in the US. I wish it was. I have two clients who could certainly use
one.
It would be great to get an update from John Berdner.

Hello all
I am again facing an AC dump load question.
How can a AC dump load be intergrated into a system? I would hope more than
just turn on a large load and turn it off. Is there methods that work?
Thanks Darryl
