Absent a one speed w/ a bag of cogs and rings the best way to see what gear is right for you is taking carful note of what gear works on a geared bike. After that adjust for wheel size/roll out, do a bit of math and you should be real close. It seems to me that whats right depends tremendously on the rider and after that the surface (i.e. dirt vs pavement). Personally I go with abt a 70 or 72 inch gear on my Simple One (running Jack Brown tires).
