The snow began falling in Maryland on Wednesday evening and by Thursday
mid-day it had accumulated to about 12 inches. Thursday afternoon and
evening brought light rain, sleet and a bit more snow. The temperature
dropped overnight, and this morning we had an icy mess. However, by 1pm
the temperature had climbed to about 50 degrees, and the melting began. I
do have bikes with fenders, so off I rode into a beautiful and slightly
surreal landscape. The air temperature felt like spring, but the landscape
looked like winter. I encountered many runners forced into the street by
unshoveled sidewalks. However, I was the only cyclist I encountered during
the hour. Most streets were plowed, but some only one lane wide. Many
intersections were still slush covered. Riding on Big Apples I navigated
carefully and without incident through the slush.
The photo of my bike was taken in front of a snow pile the plow trucks
deposited in front of a road crossing for a hiker/biker trail. That will
take a while to melt. The forecast is for more light snow tonight and
colder temperatures tomorrow........spring can't be too far away, right?
