a beefier tire was needed. switched-over to Conti TourRide 26 x 1.5 (650b / 42mm) from B-Lines
amazon provided an amazing deal for a returned stock; judging by the customeReviews, a lot of folks got thrown off by the 650b sizing, thinking they were 26" mountain bike tires. $11 a tire. they came in a huge box (which was quite wasteful).
