I hear that people who drive cars have this experience they call a driveway
moment where they get home and the story on the radio is so good they sit
in the car to finish listening.
My second day out on my new (to me) Hilsen I had a similar moment. I biked
home from work, but the riding was too much fun, I didn't want to get off
the bike. So I just kept riding.

Today, the third day on the new AHH, it joined the elusive 4H club.
Despite the Headwind, Hill, Heavy Load and after a Hard Days work the bike
was still a joy to ride. ( I was hungry too, but 5H doesn't have the same
ring)

Here are some better photos of the build:

Its a 1x9, Sugino crank borrowed from another bike, hence the mismatched
black (But I kind of dig the mis-matchedness)
I'm sticking with a single silver shifter (silver shifters are the best!)
on the downtube for now. I have been really enjoying this. Doing very
little shifting. I set one gear on the way to work (mostly downhill) and a
different one for the way home. Feels a bit like a single speed, but the
gears are there if I need them.
700c 36 spoke Velocity Dyads built by Peter White. SON Hub in the Front,
XTR in the rear. Pit lock skewers for the dangerous Austin, TX streets.
These wheels I share with my touring bike. Sharing a wheelset seems to
make sense. Switching wheels is super easy. One of the easier things I
have to do if I am getting ready for a tour. And dynamo hubs ain't cheap.
Mismatched tires for now: Pasela Panaracer TG 35mm and Schwalbe Marathon
Supreme 32mm
Busch & Mueller lights. I have been having these and don't remember the
exact models. (if you look close you can see that I used the bracket
designed for the front light and flipped upside-down to mount a fender
light to the braze-on on the seat stay)
Paul Racer center pull.
Pass and Stow Rack, Freight and Baggage bag.
Albatross Bars - I LOVE THESE BARS. So many different great positions.
Overall they make me feel like a kid.

The ride is amazing. I get that flying feeling. This is maybe
embarrassing, but I can get a little overwhelmed by the joy.
This one has been a long time in the making--I have wanted the AHH for
years. And its better than I could have imagined.

Here is to all those bikes that have come before the Hilsen that now seem
shitty in comparison. But they deserve a heart felt thanks for all getting
me all the places I had to go, the places I didnt have to go, and hauling
all those heavy loads and always getting me home. Thanks and good
riddance.

Ok. Off to wire up the rear light. And shellac the cork grips.

Happy Riding!
