I rode up Mt. Diablo for the first time last week, a short loop with friend
Mark on his Bike Friday. From Walnut Creek BART we rode south through a
sleepy downtown, just awakening to its post-xmas shopping crush, past
conservatively trimmed driveways, and on an old railway now converted to
recreational pathway. Somewhere between Alamo and Danville we turned east,
toward the high peak, and began our slow ascent. It's still a revelation
for me to ride the bike on roads I usually take the motorcycle on... the
difference in sounds and sights is delightful. The weather was perfect for
riding, if even a touch too warm on the windless south face. A few stops to
cool off in the shade, and then a final walk to the summit parking lot,
proving that all bicycles have three speeds - sitting, standing, and
walking. The descent was thrilling - endless drops and twisting turns down
the mountain and out along North Gate road, the new vee-brakes giving
neither pulse nor squeal, only steady braking. Somehow, we managed to
emerge through the vast sprawl of suburban homes at the buzzing expressway
of Ygnacio Valley road, a route most decidedly UNfriendly to bicycles, and
then snuck in a quick visit to RBBH.

A first attempt at video/still/banjo montage proves it happened:
