IMO, only get rid of a bike if you have no place to keep it. Even if you or you kid outgrows it, you might want a loaner around. Watching my buddy right now rebuilding his old bikes to fit his sprouting teenage daughters is a hoot - also fun to drop by for a homebrew and pitch in...
