For many years I commuted 30-to-32 miles rt, often increasing the miles to
35 or 40, and most of this was done on a fixed gear on a route with some 7
miles of mostly gradual climbing inbound and inevitably a strong westerly
homebound. Ages 42 to 53.

I remember asking Gary "only 9,000 miles -- it was a bad year" Blakely,
formerly of this list, about this, fearing that I was biting off too much,
and he replying that it really was no big deal and that I'd quickly get
used to it. He was right.

The only real problems were two: first, self imposed, riding too fast and
hard (I'd routinely break an hour across town, clock running, beating the
Route 66 bus) so that I simply was riding too hard and didn't recover,
falling prey to continual colds and fatigue; and the second, having to get
up 45 minutes earlier (by car my commute was 20 minutes; by bike anywhere
from 54 to 70 depending on route and effort).

Commuting temperatures ranged from the 20s on winter mornings to the 100s
on summer evenings. And wind. Oh, the wind.

If you allow enough time and ride at a "natural" pace, you should have no
problem.
